Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony — the aptly titled “Italian” — evokes the exuberant spirit of Italy by conveying the warmth and vitality of its people in a can’t-miss work teeming with energetic color. Hailed by Marin Alsop as “One of the most exciting, innovative, and outstanding conductors of her generation,” Carolyn Kuan lends her incendiary talents to Mendelssohn’s extraordinary example of musical portraiture. Kuan and your Colorado Symphony will be joined by Simon Trpčeski, who brings trademark virtuosity and dynamic stage presence to Rachmaninoff’s iconic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini — a masterpiece of the Romantic period. A pair of contemporary compositions couple nicely next to the works of these symphonic legends as Mason Bates’ Liquid Interface portrays the perils of global warming and rising sea levels while Valerie Coleman’s Seven O’Clock Shout is an anthem inspired by the tireless efforts of frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering a fitting celebration of life and a salute to their sacrifice.
